Spec Ops: The Line Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Spec Ops: The Line is a very generic third-person shooter, with some unusual storytelling techniques.
The game starts, right after the biggest sand storm, that ever hit Dubai. The 33rd where send in, to investigate the situation, but they never came back. That is where you come in, as Captain Walker, the commander of a three man Delta force group. At first you're mission is reconnaissance, then it turns to find and rescue. And then it goes FUBAR and no one knows, what the hell is going on.

But what is really interesting and unique, is the way the story is presented. Spec Ops tries to show the horrors of war, in a realistic and believable fashion and it does a pretty good job. For example, if you listen you're enemies talking before combat. You'll realize that they are just like you - soldiers following orders. Another example is the chatter, that you have with your squadmates, Adams and Lugo, and the reflection that the current situation is leaving on them.
I can sit here and give you examples, but its best just to experience it. At then end of the day, that is good story telling and its refreshing to see in a third-person shooter.

Speaking of the part, this gameplay is paynefully standard. Its just cover based shooter, like gears of war, or army of two. There is one interesting mechanic - the storms. When they appear, you're vision is limited, you can't order you squad and you have difficulties when aiming.

One of the better things, is the level design. The ruined five star hotels, converted to refugee camps, really enhance the feeling of destruction, man made, or otherwise.
The graphics also look really good. The lighting and particle effect are of high quality, the textures are really high resolution and the game looks good in general.

To top it all of, Spec Ops: The Line is a third-person shooter, with interesting storytelling techniques and good graphics, bout of them add up to the overall feeling of the game. Alas the gameplay lets it down a bit, because its just too normal, too generic.

I hope you liked my review of Spec Ops: The Line.

Kung Fu Strike - The Warrior's Rise Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Kung Fu Strike - The Warrior's Rise is a spectacle fighter, focused on high skill level and good reaction times.
In this  terrible story, you play General Loh, a kung fu master who seeks revenge for his father's death. But the problem is that the story is very badly written and very boring. Fortunately the developers knew that, so they included a "disable cutscenes" option, so you never have to care about the "story" ever again.

But what you should care about, is the completely over the top fighting system. On the outside, its pretty simple. Easy to link combos and weak enemies at the start, give you a false sense of security. But when you get further, the real enemies start coming at you and the game really begins.
If you want to survive then, you have to deflect and evade most of the attacks that are coming your way. This takes good really good reaction times, especially on high difficulty levels.

Another skill demanding mechanic is braking an enemy block. It's an easy idea, your opponent will have a combination pop-up above his head and you have to execute it correctly, in order to brake the block. The combinations are simple, "like hold this, then tap that", but if you miss it, or mess it, the enemies will hit you with the force of a speeding truck.

To top it all of, Kung Fu Strike - The Warrior's Rise is a very hard, but fair spectacle fighter, with a very rewarding combat system. Unfortunately has crappiest story of any game i played this year.

I hope you liked my review of Kung Fu Strike - The Warrior's Rise.

Psychonauts Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Psychonauts is one of the craziest, action-adventure i have every played and that can never be bad sign.
The story is staring Raz, a run away boy, that went to Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, with a dream of becoming a psychonaut. "What is a psychonaut?", you ask. Well a  psychonaut is a person, who can use psychic abilities, like levitation, or mind reading and some that are much cooler. So your goal is to complete the psychonaut training, before your parents come and take you home.

But the lessons, are not you standard sit down and take notes, oh no. In order to learn you must go in to other people's minds, usually your teachers minds. And that is where most of the craziness comes from. Of course the cartoony graphics, the lovable and funny characters complete this strange and crazy world. This game will just makes you smile, every time you play it.

From a gameplay standpoint, its а standard action-adventure game, with a lot of platforming and a lot of things to collect. The fighting is somewhat simplistic, but once you get the really fun spells, like pyrokinesis, it becomes pretty enjoyable. Overall you never feel like you are doing something meaningless, or tedious, so it's certainly better then some other action-adventure game.

The PC port feels really tight and well polished, you can still see console elements in it, but its nothing to die about.
To top it all of, Psychonauts is awesome, crazy, off it's rockers and if you are sick of all of the COD and BF clones that we have now, you should get it. At the moment its one Steam and GOG for PC and MAC.

I hope you liked my review of Psychonauts.

Orcs Must Die 2 Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Heads will roll, orcs will die and ogres will cry, like little girls, just like in the first Orcs Must Die.
The story, of this kill everything simulator, starts where the previous game left of. The evil Sorceress, is on her way to be get killed, by her former orc allies, but then something incredible happens. A very small, unstable rift opens and she used it to escape in the human world. To her surprise, the first thing she sees, is The War Mage, from the first game. So they must stop the orcs from exiting the mines, in to the human kingdoms.

The game still carries the gameplay ideas from Orcs Must Die. You build traps, that kill orcs, but they are not sufficient, so you must use weapons too. Its like a mixture of tower defense and a action-RPG.
The biggest change is the fact that you have two classes - The War Mage and The Sorceress. The main difference between the two, is the fact that The War Mage has equal amounts of health and mana and The Sorceress has more mana then health. Another difference is the trap roster. Its a bit different for each of the characters and you compensate those differences is co-op.

Another major change is the item upgrade system. This was, of course in the first game, but it has seen a lot of changes since. Now you can upgrade not only the traps, but all of your items. Also every item has multiple levels of upgrades and branching choices. This gives you a lot more customization,so you can adapt the game to your play stile and not the other way around.
There are also a lot of new things, like new traps, new enemies, endless mode and the highly anticipated co-op. Unfortunately i can't say anything about it, because my friends haven't even played the first Orcs Must Die. If you want more info on the co-op i recommend the video the TotalBiscuit made about it.

This is where i should tell you, what i don't like about the game. Now that is a very hard question. One of the frustrating things, is the fact that you never get stats, like trap damage, reset time or anything, so if you are a min-maxer, you will hate it.  Another very minor grudge, is that the story is cheesy and very predictable, but this game has never being about story. So overall very small problems, that can be easily ignored.

To top it all of Orcs Must Die 2, is one of best games i played this year. It grate has variety, more of everything, improved game mechanics and gameplay. It every runs better then the first game and so i really hope that robot entertainment continue to make game of this quality.

I hope you liked my review of
Orcs Must Die 2.

Q.U.B.E. Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Q.U.B.E is a physics based, puzzle game, that has a lot of Portal vibes to it.
You wake up in some kind of lab. White tiles, cleaned to perfection surround you. You don't know where you are, you don't know that to do, hell, you don't know who you are. The only things you know is that you have strange gloves on your hands and that there is one way to go - forward.
You start walking and you reach a red block. You point one of your gloves at it and the block goes up. You point the other and it goes down. Now you understand. The gloves manipulate colored blocks in the test chamber and you are the lab rat.

You have three things, at your disposal to help you solve the puzzles. Jump and the two gloves, which you use with the mouse buttons. By using one of the gloves on a block, you activate it in some way, if you use the other one - you return the block in the default position.
What blocks do depends on the color, red blocks extend from the walls, blue blocks make you bounce, etcetera.
The goal of every puzzle is simple, get to the exit and enter the next one. The puzzles start simple, but they are fast to introduce new concepts, like new blocks, like balls, like puzzles in the dark. Each of the new concepts brings with it, new ways to play the game and new challenges.

As i mentioned before, Q.U.B.E. feels a lot like Portal. From the ambient music, to the level design. But there is one thing missing - Glados. There are no cake jokes, no insults, no robot overlord. The entire game is just one giant puzzle. There is nothing nececearly wrong with that, but it can make you feel alone and then the game starts to feel really empty and lackluster.

To top it all of Q.U.B.E. is a really nice puzzle game, with a lot of variety. I just wish they go all out on the Portal atmosphere, because not hearing a single voice threw the entire game gets kind of boring. But if you are looking for a pure puzzle game, with no humor, Q.U.B.E. is a very good choice.

I hope you liked my review of Q.U.B.E.

Super Crate Box Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Super Crate Box is a simple, free, retro platformer.
The goal is the game, is to get as many crates as possible, while dogging and killing enemies. Every time you get a crate - your weapon changes. Every weapon is used in a different way, so you must adapt fast to the new situation, or you will die.

In the meantime, enemies are falling threw a hole in the sealing and are trying to get to the fire, at the bottom. If they reach it, they change color from green to red, they fall threw the hale once again, but this time they are much faster and harder to kill. So its best to kill them while they are slow and weak. Unfortunately that is not always possible, if you had a bad gun at the time.

The retro 8-bit feel is captured really well, both threw the pixelated graphics style and the really good chiptunes. Also the game is unforgivingly hard, if you touch anenemy - you die, if you fall in the fire - you die.
But there is a modern twist to the game - a progression system. You can unlock new levels, weapons and skins, by collecting more crates. That way Super Crate Box always feels fresh and never gets boring.

To top it all of Super Crate Box is a fun and addicting, retro platformer, with a very interesting concept.
And the best part is that its free, so you can get it from http://supercratebox.com/ .

I hope you liked my review of
Super Crate Box.

Waves Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Waves is a abstract, twin-stick shooter, made by Squid In a Box, which one the best names for a game developer.
In Waves you are a ball, that looks like something straight out out of Tron. The goal is to stay alive, by killing enemy  balls, cubes and other colorful shapes, much like Geometry Wars.

As the ball, you have two special abilities, which compensate for the lack of Power-ups.The first one is bullet time, you can use it after killing some enemies, more enemies - bigger duration. The second is a bomb, which kills all enemies is a big radius, you get that by getting a x10 combo.

There are six modes, which are all played in the same circle arena. Four of them are really generic and expected, like "survival", so i am going to focus of the more original once.
One of the better "Chase". In this mode you have three lives and a five second life. In order to get more time, you have to get to the red hexagons, that appear on the ground. You can also, be killed by enemies, of course.

And my favorite mod, is Bombing Run. In this mode you have three lives, but you cant use your weapon. In order to kill the enemies, you have to take a bomb from red hexagons and then you have ten seconds, to get it to a green hexagon, then every enemy - dies. If you are to slow and miss the ten seks - you die.

One of the interesting things is how you get your global points multiplier. At random a glue hexagon will appear, if you get it - you increase the multiplier, by one.
But the game gets a bit repetative and borring after about half an hour, so its a good choice, if you have some time to kill. Another problem, of you can call it that, is that the game is too colorful, so sometimes you can get headache.

To top it all of Waves is a fun and colorful twin-stick shooter, made my a developer with the best name ever.

I hope you liked my review of
Waves.

Space Pirates And Zombies Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Space Pirates And Zombies, or S.P.A.Z., is a top down, space-combat, real-time strategy  game, where you kill space pirates... and zombies.
The story starts in a randomly generated universe. In it you can find well known stereotypes of criminals and "police" force. Your mission is to get to the center of the universe. Half way thew the game zombies appear, for no apparent reason.
The story has several unexpected twists, which make it kind of enjoyable. Unfortunately it's mostly written, but the few voice acted bits are voiced by TotalBiscuit, and that is always good.

You start the game with one very small ship, but as you gather resources, you can build bigger and better once. When you create a ship you can fully customize the hull, weapons, armor type and much more. As you go further in you can have more ships in your squad, and this is where the RTS elements come in play. Then you can go to the tactical screen and order your ships around and when you go back to the game screen you can manually control one of them.

There are several problems with the game, as always. First, if you start on a small universe, there are some very large level skips. So you have to grind in the old zones, in order to go to new once. Second  the map universe map screen needs to have more options, like the ability to pin, or remember a system of interest, like giving you the map layout, or quest in that system. Fortunately the problems are few and far between.

To top it all of, Space Pirates And Zombies is a really good space-combat, RTS, that provides a lot of customization and a lot of replay value.

I hope you liked my review of Space Pirates And Zombies.

Dark Horizon Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

From the moment i played Freelancer, i started looking for good space combat simulator. And recently i found Dark Horizon. So the question is, will it be as good as i hope, or will it flop like so many before it?
The basic story outline is fairly simple and predictable. An unstoppable force, called The Mirk, is destroying the galaxy, one star system at a time. You are a soldier tasked to defend The Light Core - the only thing powerful enough to stop The Mirk.

The gameplay is pretty standard, but it has some interesting mechanics.
One is the heat system. If you use the cooling system and the temperature drops, your weapons are less powerful, you move slower, but the ship is invisible and no one can target it. If you use the heating system, you temperature starts rising, your ship's weapons become more powerful, but your shield is being drained. You must find the balance between power and survivability.

One of the better things the game has is the level of customization. You can select the ships hull type, armor, shields and much more. But the best thing is the weapon building. You can select the projectile type, the caliber and the modifications for the weapon. Half of the fun is building your ships and weapons depending on the mission parameters.

Unfortunately the game  is plagued by problems. The first and biggest is the fact that the weapons feel very weak, especially in third person. They sound more like toys then guns and that doesn't give you the "i'm powerful as god" feel, you want from a game like this. So i strongly recommend using the first person camera - the weapons sound and feel a lot better.
Other problems include terrible voice acting, badly written lines, boring story and some audio bugs.

To top it all of Dark Horizon is a fairly good space combat simulator, with an amazing amount of  customization, nice enemy variety, varied environments. Unfortunately the story, voice acting and the shooting in third person let it down.

I hope you liked my review of Dark Horizon.
If you did, please, comment and share with your friends.

Limbo Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Limbo is a very simple and very enjoyable, puzzle-platformer.
The story line is basic, to say the least. You are a boy with no name, who went down in Limbo, in search of his missing sister.
You soon realize that there is only one rule in Limbo - everything kills you. So you must avoid traps, tribesman, spiders and much more, in order to save your sister.

The most interesting thing about Limbo is the monochromatic, black and white graphic stile. It gives the game somewhat creepy feeling. That feeling is strongly reinforced, by the sounds and music.

The gameplay is one of the simplest i have seen. Most of the puzzles are physics based where you have to drag an item, use a switch, time a jump, or something similar. The puzzles become fairly challenging by end of the game, and you can get a lot of enjoyment, by solving them.

To top it all of, Limbo is a fun, creepy, puzzle-platformer, with characteristic graphic style.

I hope you liked my review of Limbo.
If you did, please, comment and share with your friends.
