DLC Quest Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing

DLC Quest is a 8-bit style platform and is probably the funniest game i have ever played.

The story of this 8-bit masterpiece is really simple. You are good guy, of course, and you have to save the princess from the bad guy. So if played Mario, you know the very plot. But what you don't know is the answer to the simple question "What happens when DLC goes too far?".

Lest start from the beginning. What is DLC? DLC stands for Downloadable content and its usually designed in such a way, to make you play and get nothing in return.

And so DLC Quest mocks the idea of DLC, in a very satirical and funny way. The game's philosophy is "if you need it, its DLC", and you have to buy it with coins (not real money).

And when i say "if you need it", i mean you will need it. You have to buy DLC's like the "Movement Pack", that features next gen control, like jumping and moving left. You also have to buy things like music and animation. As you probably guessed, this game does not take its self seriously at all.

Things that the game does really well are satire, cynicism and exaggeration. The writing for the game, is just very funny, both in the DLC descriptions and in the conversation with the NPC. All of it is worth reading.

The game is kind of short, you can complete it in about 20-30 minutes, but feels just right. If the game was longer, the jokes would have gotten repetitive. If it was shorter, its not worth the price of $2.

To top it all of, DLC Quest is a great platformer, with a very nice 8-bit aesthetic and some of the funniest writing, ever put in a video game.

I hope you liked my review of DLC Quest.

Unmechanical Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Unmechanical is a puzzle game, where you play one of the cutest robots.
The game starts with a cinematic, of you being kidnapped and released in some sort of test facility. I am sick of this cliche, its so overused in puzzle games. Anyway, once in the facility, you have to complete some basic physics based puzzles, that get harder and harder. The only tool you have, is the tractor beam, that can be used to pull and lift objects.

One thing that the game has, is variety. You have weight puzzles, sequence puzzle and some that just require some common sense. What makes them interesting, is the setting of the game. From the adorable robot, to the beautiful backgrounds. From the sound design, to the ambient music. The game just has, so much character its unbelievable. It reminds me of  Machinarium and that is never a bad thing.

One of the really grate things about the game, is the lack of UI. The environment, just telegraphs all that you need to know about the puzzles. But, sometimes it can be confusing and you will not know what is background and what is foreground. Another slightly annoying thing, is the with of you're tractor beam, its not wide enough and you have to be very precise, in order to lift something.

To top it all of, Unmechanical is a grate little game, that can be quite relaxing any fan of puzzles can enjoy with ease.

I hope you liked my review of Unmechanical.

Q.U.B.E. Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Q.U.B.E is a physics based, puzzle game, that has a lot of Portal vibes to it.
You wake up in some kind of lab. White tiles, cleaned to perfection surround you. You don't know where you are, you don't know that to do, hell, you don't know who you are. The only things you know is that you have strange gloves on your hands and that there is one way to go - forward.
You start walking and you reach a red block. You point one of your gloves at it and the block goes up. You point the other and it goes down. Now you understand. The gloves manipulate colored blocks in the test chamber and you are the lab rat.

You have three things, at your disposal to help you solve the puzzles. Jump and the two gloves, which you use with the mouse buttons. By using one of the gloves on a block, you activate it in some way, if you use the other one - you return the block in the default position.
What blocks do depends on the color, red blocks extend from the walls, blue blocks make you bounce, etcetera.
The goal of every puzzle is simple, get to the exit and enter the next one. The puzzles start simple, but they are fast to introduce new concepts, like new blocks, like balls, like puzzles in the dark. Each of the new concepts brings with it, new ways to play the game and new challenges.

As i mentioned before, Q.U.B.E. feels a lot like Portal. From the ambient music, to the level design. But there is one thing missing - Glados. There are no cake jokes, no insults, no robot overlord. The entire game is just one giant puzzle. There is nothing nececearly wrong with that, but it can make you feel alone and then the game starts to feel really empty and lackluster.

To top it all of Q.U.B.E. is a really nice puzzle game, with a lot of variety. I just wish they go all out on the Portal atmosphere, because not hearing a single voice threw the entire game gets kind of boring. But if you are looking for a pure puzzle game, with no humor, Q.U.B.E. is a very good choice.

I hope you liked my review of Q.U.B.E.

Waves Review

Hi, my name is Nik and today i am reviewing:

Waves is a abstract, twin-stick shooter, made by Squid In a Box, which one the best names for a game developer.
In Waves you are a ball, that looks like something straight out out of Tron. The goal is to stay alive, by killing enemy  balls, cubes and other colorful shapes, much like Geometry Wars.

As the ball, you have two special abilities, which compensate for the lack of Power-ups.The first one is bullet time, you can use it after killing some enemies, more enemies - bigger duration. The second is a bomb, which kills all enemies is a big radius, you get that by getting a x10 combo.

There are six modes, which are all played in the same circle arena. Four of them are really generic and expected, like "survival", so i am going to focus of the more original once.
One of the better "Chase". In this mode you have three lives and a five second life. In order to get more time, you have to get to the red hexagons, that appear on the ground. You can also, be killed by enemies, of course.

And my favorite mod, is Bombing Run. In this mode you have three lives, but you cant use your weapon. In order to kill the enemies, you have to take a bomb from red hexagons and then you have ten seconds, to get it to a green hexagon, then every enemy - dies. If you are to slow and miss the ten seks - you die.

One of the interesting things is how you get your global points multiplier. At random a glue hexagon will appear, if you get it - you increase the multiplier, by one.
But the game gets a bit repetative and borring after about half an hour, so its a good choice, if you have some time to kill. Another problem, of you can call it that, is that the game is too colorful, so sometimes you can get headache.

To top it all of Waves is a fun and colorful twin-stick shooter, made my a developer with the best name ever.

I hope you liked my review of
Waves.
